Evaluation Question 2 Planning

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

I understand that for this question I will need to review how my main product and ancillary texts are similar and how they contrast. Therefore, to show this I have created a list of what i can try and talk about in this evaluation question:

  • Relates and contrasts - This is a point which I will need to include throughout the question, where I will relate and contrast all of my products.
  • Similar analogies - This is similar to the point made above, however it will be specific elements that relate the digipak, magazine advert and music video.
  • Symbolism - This is what aspects within my texts represent or symbolise.
  • Copyright and permission
  • Colour theme - This is an important aspect of the texts as it will link them together, and make it easier for the audience to identify the products if there is a running theme.
  • Authentic style to an artist/Brand identity - Some artists use particular fonts which are signature to them, or some have a signature symbol that represents them, e.g. Take That.
  • What? Why? - These are questions explaining what and why I included something in my texts.
  • Stereotypes - This will be explaining the stereotypes of the artists genre.
  • Theories - Representation theory, audience theory and mention genre theory.

Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media texts?

I have analysed my two products and at the end of this post I will try to draw conclusions on whether my products develop, use or challenge conventions of real media texts.

Digipak Analysis
Here is my Analysis of my digipak:

Magazine Advert Analysis
Here is an analysis of my magazine advert, explaining why aspects of the advert have been included and what things are portraying on the advert.

- For the background of my magazine advert, I chose to separate it into three parts, it shows three different types of waves, music waves, sea waves and also hand waves. This could be portrayed to an audience that Mr Probz as an artist has various different sides, and this is what i wanted to portray by doing this.
- Also I applied three different coloured filters onto the magazine, as I still wanted the advert to link to the music video in some way or another, so that the viewers and fans could make link between the two. I used the colour of green/blue at the top to help portray a sky, and then a blue in the middle to represent the sea, and then yellow at the bottom of the advert to represent sand, therefore still linking to my music video in some way, as the colours suggest a beach theme.
- On the advert I also included a small picture of the album cover on the front so that people can associate the album with this advert when viewing them.
-I chose to include a QR code on my magazine advert as I believe this is an interactive feature, so that anyone looking at the magazine can get a direct link to watch the music video.
- Another use of interactive things on my magazine advert is the Twitter, Facebook and website links at the top as anyone looking at the advert can again see who the artist is whenever they choose.
- I used ratings at the bottom of the magazine advert as they are in the line of sight for a viewer and they can understand how brilliant the album is, therefore making them want to buy the product more.
- I thought it was important to include a picture of the artist, Mr Probz on the magazine article as it can link the the album cover as it is the same person, but it also creates more of a personal link as people get to see what the person making the music looks like.

USE - Here is a list of ways that my products use conventions of real media texts...

  • In my music video i have included shots that the original music video contains, for example I have included a wide shot of waves like in the original music video as the lyrics links to what is on screen at the time. Therefore this link uses conventions of real media texts.
  • The narrative of my product is very linear and it comes to a conclusion at the end of the music video, and the main lyric throughout 'drifting away' also fits in with the narrative as it is represented through the visuals and the narrative of the music video. For example we see the couple drifting away through the narrative.
  • The setting of my music video is mainly in Egypt and this is a typical convention which is usually shown in R&B music videos.
DEVELOPMENTS - Here is a list of ways that my products use conventions of real media texts...
  • I have developed the 'wave' aspect of my music video by including and expanding the ideas of it, because I have moved the symbol across to the ancillaries.
CHALLENGING - Here is a list of ways that my products use conventions of real media texts...
  • There isn't much ways in which I challenge conventions, however i believe that is a good thing that I have mostly used or developed the conventions. I have done this so my product will be as multi-dimensional as possible. However, there is one aspect in which I challenged conventions:
  • There is usually a performance element to a R&B music video, however I have not used one at all, however I believe that the way I have made my music video fits in better than if I was to have someone singing or performing.

Evaluation Question 1 Planning

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media texts?

Having done some more research on my artist, it has become apparent that finding a set music genre for my song which I used for my music video is difficult. Some say that it is in the R&B genre, and others say dance. From conventions that I have looked at during my research I believe that it fits in more with the dance genre and it uses more conventions of the dance genre. I have collected some research on conventions of the dance music genre and also some on the R&B genre, therefore I can now look over my research and see which one it conforms to the most. Then in the next post I will describe how the music video, magazine advert and digipak uses develops and challenges the conventions of real media texts.

I believe that from the research I have found, I believe that my products use, develop and also challenge more of the R&B conventions of a music video. This demonstrates that in the music industry it is hard to actually pin down what genre music videos are, as not all have a music videos have a clear genre.

Magazine Advert

creating my QR code

Creating my QR Code:

 by ellencartwright97 on GoAnimate

This is the website that I used to create my QR Code, it was very quick and easy, I chose my QR code to be linked to my blog where people can see my work and also see my music video easily...

By using a QR code I will be conforming to typical standards of magazine articles in these days as this is typically what the audience uses to connect with and artist, plus most audience members would have a QR code scanner on their phone.

creating my digipak and advert

Creating my Digipak and Advert:

At home i started to create my digipak on Fireworks from the knowledge that I had picked up from GCSE Media, and as I was doing this I started to gain extra knowledge and techniques from doing this...

This is the edit that I did at home, this was just the basis of what I wanted on my advert...

This is some of my digipak that I have started creating also, I wanted the digipak to be quite urban and edgy as that is the type of artist that Mr Probz is well know for, so I plan on adding a paper sheet background to the set list so it looks like how I wanted it to be represented.

Final Cut

Final Cut

Here is a final cut of my music video, from the peer feedback that I have received, I believe that nothing else in this video needs changing, and I have completed the video to the best of my ability, showing my complexity of skills when editing, but also imaginatively as I gathered the ideas for this video at the start of the process.

The Ending to my Music Video

The Ending to my Music Video

It has taken me a while to come to a conclusion on how i will end my music video, and i have decided that with two shots i will overlay them so it appears that the girl in the video is the stronger person and she is walking away from the relationship. I didn't want to music video to end abruptly, but i wanted a message to be portrayed to leave in the audiences mind, so this is why i have used this effect. You can see from the picture below how the transition works:

Cutting and Managing Footage on the Timeline

Cutting and Managing Footage on the Timeline

To start the process of exiting my footage, I uploaded and then started to place the footage on the timeline in the order that I wanted it. When I did that i started to time my footage with the music, and this meant chopping my footage down.

Now I am at the stage where I am adding affects to the footage such as cross dissolves for transitions.

First Cut

First Cut

Here is a first cut of my music video to the song 'Waves' which I have uploaded to Youtube:

One problem with this at the moment is that I think I may have turned the music up too loud on the editing software 'FinalCut Pro', therefore when editing my video again I will change this.

What changes did you make? If any? How will your product be affected?

What changes did you make? If any? How will your product be affected?

Here is a comic strip stating the changes i had to make:

I believe that the changes I had to make have benefited my product because some of the shots that I had planned to do wouldn't have looked correct in the film if I had just made do with the clips I had planned.  Therefore I don't think my product will be affected because of this.

What surprises were there on filming days

What surprises were there on filming days

I didn't really come across many surprises whilst filming my clips for my media, I did my filming in two countries, England and Egypt, and as I have never been to Egypt there were some shots that I had planned on doing that just weren't feasible. However to make up for this I got other shots that would fit in with the music video.

Roles and Responsibilities

Roles and responsibilities

As I worked alone I took on most of the roles and responsibilities, however I couldn't do everything by myself, so here is a list of the roles that I and others took on in the filming of my video:

- The role of the director: This role was undertaken by my friend Harriet Fowler, however i did look often at what shots needed to be filmed next.
- The camera operator: I took this role on, therefore i knew what shot i got and whether they were framed and correct. Moreover, when i was filming in Egypt as i was in several shots my Dad and Sister helped film when i had framed the shot correctly and as i wanted it.

Filming Day

Filming Day

I have chosen the third week of the summer holidays to film the parts in England for my music video. This is because, Dayle, the boy within my music video is available most of the week. I am going to try and film on Monday 4th as if i dont get something finished on this day, and have the rest of the week to film any extra.
