The finding of contact details to get permission for 'Waves'
I have found it quite difficult to find contact details for the record company Republic Records, i am still in the process of trying to find these contact details. Although i am finding it difficult to find the contact details i will have to find some sort of solution to this problem as i need to receive the permission to use this song as soon as possible because i want to start creating my shooting script and storyboard.
Although the song that i am using doesn't really have many lyrics I analysed then and I have noticed themes of change and time within the song, this I fitting with the representations I would like to create in my music video.
Here are two interviews I did in lesson time, therefore these interviewees are both media literate and can answer the question I provide them with in much more depth.
This is the first interview of audience feedback.
This is the second interview of audience feedback.
I have collected the data from my survey monkey and here are the results that I have seen from it:
It is obvious that from my audience feedback I should use several people within my music video rather than one main star. I like this idea for my music video as I believe it gives the video more of a naturalistic atmosphere and setting and this is the type of thing I wanted my music video to be portrayed as.
I have collected the data from my survey monkey and here are the results that I have seen from it:
In the first stages of thinking about my music video I thought I was going to include miming, and the audience feedback suggests that using miming in the video is popular. However, I watched other examples of A2 music videos on YouTube and I think that unless the video is professional there shouldn't be any miming within the video. I have decided to stick with this for my final idea, as I believe if it is used and isn't in time with the video, it can look cheesy and wont be as successful as if it would with no miming.
I have collected the data from my survey monkey and here are the results that I have seen from it:
Initially I wanted to do a vlog type music video, therefore making it more realistic, and by asking the question above in my survey, it has allowed me to make my decision. This is therefore based on my opinion and the opinion of the audience I asked to fill out my survey, so the style of my music video will be more naturalistic rather than set in one location.
I have collected the data from my survey monkey and here are the results that I have seen from it:
Although I am going to have some sort of narrative in my music video, although the feedback I have received says that is something that can make your music video more successful. However, I feel for the type of song I will be using, and messages that I would like to portray in my music video, the mise-en-scene will help to achieve more of the successful element within the video.
I have collected the data from my survey monkey and here are the results that I have seen from it:
From this question on my survey I have understood that newer songs are most popular with my target audience, therefore I am going to stick with this information I have collected and I am going to use a new song for my music video. By using a newer song, I can get more recent inspiration from the video and maybe use some of these aspects in my product.
I have collected the data from my survey monkey and here are the results that I have seen from it:
This question in my survey suggests that bands are more popular than solo artists, however I am going to go against the audiences opinion on this question as I prefer solo artists. Also on the further audience feedback I have received from these questions both of my interviewees prefer solo artists.
I have collected the data from my survey monkey and here are the results that I have seen from it:
Initially I wanted to use a song by Labrinth, however from my audience feedback I have seen that Calvin Harris is the most popular type of artist for the genre that I would like to use for my music video, however I don't believe that this means I have to use it. This is because I don't think I would need to use the most popular artist for my music video, as it make make the video more enjoyable if a song hasn't been too overplayed in the past and people can enjoy through watching my video.
After making a graph for my results of this question in the survey, it is obvious that there was a unanimous decision that Calvin Harris is the most well know artist, however from this information I have realised that I do not want to do the most popular artist for my music video, therefore I am going another artist that I did not include in the survey, which is a less known artist: Mr Probz.
I wanted to create the representation ofjourney within ,my music video, and here are some ideas of how I would like to include this in my video:
This is a vlog type handheld shot which will help portray a sense of journey to the audience as if they haven't taking any belongings with them apart from a camera and a few other things.
I also believe that by using dissolves as transitions between shots, I can also create this representation of someone being on a journey. By doing this you could say that there may be a story line in my music video, however it wont be the typical love story line as I am going to try and include more realistic characters within my film, doing this by not including miming in my video.
Another representation that I would like to create is change, and this is how I think I would create it within my music video:
I will try to film over a long period of time, and then when it comes to editing my music video I will make the speed of the video faster therefore creating a sense of change. This video shows the type of thing of want to create but maybe with stars or the sun setting and rising.
Another representation i am going to try and create in my music video is reality.
I am going to try and film my video on holiday, therefore I would like to create a sense of reality by filming typical life and settings from where i am going. I believe this can be created by the vlogging techniques again, but also by the setting in which I film, and I will try to make this as typical of the country as possible. If I do this, it is possible that it won't go with Andrew Goodwin's theory as his theory seems to be more staged than this.
Within the past few days I have made a survey, and this is to help me gather information about my style of music which will be used for my music video, but also what should happen within the video.
Here are the questions that i used in my survey to help me gather this information:
Hopefully, if i get around 10 responses, I can get an average view from the audience that I have asked, and this will help me to try and appeal to more ages when filming my music video as I asked an audience which ranged from 16-45.
Here is another analysis of a possible song that I am going to use for my A2 music video:
This video has the genre of pop/dance music and the genre has seemed to guide the production choices from what i can see in the video, as the song is very upbeat and there is a lot of long takes within the video to fit in with the pace of the song and depending when the sound changes in the song the shot does. Also the people starring in the video are mainly all men, therefore appealing to the typical target audience for pop/dance music which is the younger generation, and narrowed down even more, girls.
This production shows quite a clear story line, therefore as a pop/dance music video the audience can relate to the viewing of the video and the lyrics of the song unlike 'Let the Sunshine'. Also, Calvin Harris is an artist that is categorized into the music genre of pop/dance/club, and the nature of the video that is put across in this production has the setting of somewhere abroad, therefore implying to the audience that you have to be away to have a good 'Summer' and maybe even fall in love, showing that this video agrees with Todorov and his theory. I believe that Goodwin's theory is challenged in this video, as everything that Goodwin has said is either not included or only included in minor detail. For example, rather than there being close ups of the artist in the video, several wide shots are used with the artist in, to show the surroundings of the setting he is filming within and maybe to create a different feel to the video. However, unlike in 'Let the Sunshine' and going with Andrew Goodwin's theory, there is a use of voyeuristic treatment of the female body towards the end of the video, and this therefore appeals to another target audience of men, as they would be interested in the video because of the types of women that is in it towards the end.
Here is another analysis of a possible song that I am going to use for my A2 music video:
This song is more of a R&B and soul type of genre, but it does have some pop/dance genre elements in there. There is an obvious story line within the video, therefore making it easier for the viewer to follow and maybe understand the lyrics more, and this emotional connection with the audience is usually something created by the R&B genre. Also as the song is quite a slow song with a strong beat in the background, this would have allowed the creator of the music video do add many wide shots that stay on screen for a while, as these type of camera shots fit in with the genre.
I believe the story line again helps the audience use their knowledge to understand the product more, as I said before, I believe it helps guide the audience through the music video, therefore making it flow and look more professional when being viewed by an audience. As the audience we are also made aware of the type of setting of the film at the beginning by the handheld vlog type mid shots as they are travelling down a road in the care. This allows the audience to get a feel for the settings that they will be partaking within.
This product does reflect society in some ways as the story line is a basic love story, however it goes against the theory of Todorov as although it has a equilibrium and a disequilibrium, there is no resolution at the end of the music video. Therefore making it more realistic for the society that they live in rather than being unrealistic with resolution at the end.
I do believe there are some hints of Andrew Goodwin's theory within this video, such as there is some voyeuristic treatment of the female body around the middle of the music video. However, there is no obvious relationship between the visuals and the lyrics or many clear close ups of the artist, they were mainly wide shots of the partners doing things, this suggests that the artists wanted the story line to be clear in this video.
Firstly I have chosen to analyse 'Let the Sunshine' by Labrinth as I believe that this song could be a one of 3 possible choices that i may use for my A2 music video project.
This song is the genre of pop, and the genre is shown to guide this music video by typical stereotypes of male pop music videos, for example, there are several close ups of the main artist, Labrinth, implying that he is the main focus of the video. Also the film is non chronological throughout, as you see him in different places throughout the video and there isn't an obvious story line portrayed by the actual scenes within the video, but only from the lyrics that are sang within the video. However, stereotypically in pop videos you get back up dancers or the artist takes part in a dance routine, so therefore this music video goes against these stereotypes in this way as within the video Labrinth uses expressive dance and dances on the spot, suggesting it is not rehearsed and he doesn't have any backing dancers to support him.
I don't think the audience could use their knowledge of the pop genre to judge this product and try to understand it, as although in some ways it does fit in with the conventions of pop music videos, not everything within the video is something typically used in the pop genre. However the use of the relationship between the visuals and the lyrics in the video, such as when Labrinth says "Let the sun shine" he is standing in high key lighting with the sun shining in the background. This could give a message to the audience that there is always light shining on you and someone or something guiding you to the best place in life. I think the lyrics of the song tend to reflect society more than the actual setting and footage that is used to create this pop music video. This is because in life you couldn't actually stand in the middle of the street with the sun shining naturally in the background throwing your arms in the background. However, the lyrics that are being sang fit in with the actions and setting of the video, therefore making it reflect society more by using both the lyrics and the setting to portray correct message to the target audience. I believe that you could say some parts of this video go with the theory of Andrew Goodwin, however some things within the video could challenge this. For example, this video doesn't use the voyeuristic treatment of the female body. On the other hand, there are a lot of close ups of the artist therefore focusing on the main artist in the video, also there is a relationship to the visuals and relationships, stated in one of the paragraphs above. Also to challenge Andrew Goodwins theory, this video doesnt have obvious genre conventions of a pop music video because of the setting and the use of having no backing dancers, and concentrating on the main artist within the video.
Calvin Harris is another artist that I may use for my A2 music video as his music fits in with the genre that I would like to use, and I believe his songs are the correct sound for the surroundings that I would like to set my music video.
Here are some of his songs which I haven't analysed:
Labrinth is one of the artists that I am thinking about choosing for my song choice for my music video, here is some research that I did to help me with my choice.
Some songs that Labrinth has done in the past which I haven't analysed:
I have chosen to base my music video around the genre of pop, and this slide show describes the genre of pop and then within this genre a sub genre of pop/dance.
I have chosen to work by myself for this task as I think it would help me achieve my best results when it comes to the planning, filming and editing of the film as I can use my own ideas and I won't have to think about anyone else's opinion until it comes to the audience feedback.
Also as others have different lessons to me in my class, I believe it would be easier to organise when I do the filming for the task, as I will be able to film when I want and when I have time. Therefore I will be able to manage my time the way I would like, and this is something that I would like to get better at during this project.
The task for my A2 course is to create a promotional package for the release of a new CD to include a promotional video, a magazine advert and a digipak for the release of the CD.
I am looking forward to the creating of my music video, magazine and digipak, as i believe i can use my creative skills in doing this, and this is something that I enjoy doing. The music video will be something that I will be interested in when filming, as I am going to try to choose a song that I can relate to and that I also enjoy listening to.
