Calvin Harris Summer video analysis

Calvin Harris Summer video analysis

Here is another analysis of a possible song that I am going to use for my A2 music video:

This video has the genre of pop/dance music and the genre has seemed to guide the production choices from what i can see in the video, as the song is very upbeat and there is a lot of long takes within the video to fit in with the pace of the song and depending when the sound changes in the song the shot does. Also the people starring in the video are mainly all men, therefore appealing to the typical target audience for pop/dance music which is the younger generation, and narrowed down even more, girls.

This production shows quite a clear story line, therefore as a pop/dance music video the audience can relate to the viewing of the video and the lyrics of the song unlike 'Let the Sunshine'. Also, Calvin Harris is an artist that is categorized into the music genre of pop/dance/club, and the nature of the video that is put across in this production has the setting of somewhere abroad, therefore implying to the audience that you have to be away to have a good 'Summer' and maybe even fall in love, showing that this video agrees with Todorov and his theory.

I believe that Goodwin's theory is challenged in this video, as everything that Goodwin has said is either not included or only included in minor detail. For example, rather than there being close ups of the artist in the video, several wide shots are used with the artist in, to show the surroundings of the setting he is filming within and maybe to create a different feel to the video. However, unlike in 'Let the Sunshine' and going with Andrew Goodwin's theory, there is a use of voyeuristic treatment of the female body towards the end of the video, and this therefore appeals to another target audience of men, as they would be interested in the video because of the types of women that is in it towards the end.
